Principles of Torsion Test
Original language description
Torsion plastometry is one of the most widely recognized methods of laboratory research into deformation characteristics of hot-formed metallic materials. It is one of the two basic tests (together with the compression test) which offer the arrangement where one parameter is kept constant while the other two out of three (temperature, strain rate, strain) are varied. This enables us to perform basic physics studies of characteristics of tested materials. A torsion test is based on introducing shear stress into the material and is the only test to provide large strain magnitudes without effects of external friction. It is also beneficial in the wide range of applications it offers. Its drawbacks include the fact that the course of strain between the axis of the sample and its surface is non-uniform, which makes the definition of resulting microstructure difficult.
