    The paper deals with the methodology of determination the boundary conditions in a continuous casting mould for the purpose of numerical modelling. Most relevant is heat transport in a direction perpendicularly to the strand surface. The most commonly used is a condition of 2(nd) kind that is heat flux particularly in the cases where a model does not include a mould. If a model contains a mould, other types of surface conditions can be specified, such as a condition of 3(rd) type for heat transport fromthe strand surface through a layer of a lubricant, gas gap, a copper plate to the cooling water by convection. Number of unknown parameters in this case is large and the condition is loaded with an uncertainty of heat resistance in the gap.
