POSSIBILITIES OF RECYCLING OF OILED SCALE FOR PREPARATION OF PIGMENTS

  • Original language description

In the Czech Republic an important company exists with a closed metallurgical cycle. Similarly as any other big company it generates secondary waste from metallurgical processes. Considerable amount of scale and scale sludge is created at steelmaking, continuous casting and rolling, it represents in total some 3-4 wt.% of produced rolled products. Part of these scales and scale sludge, approx. 20%, is contaminated with oil, which is used mainly for gearboxes in rolling mills and for lubrication of other machinery. Cleaned scales are fine grained and they can be a suitable alternative for preparation of pigment. Pigments are used for preparation of engobes, glazes and other materials for application of colours. This paper is focused on possibilities of utilisation of scales in the form of pigment for preparation of glazes. Since this is a new research project, the primary step was to determine the basic physical and chemical properties of the scale: grain size analysis, chemical composition, X ray phase analysis and spectro-photometric colour measurement of colour scheme. The next step concerned proposal of ratio of the input components for the prepared mixtures for preparation of ceramic glazes sprayed on potsherd. In total, 14 types of mixed glazes were prepared and two mixtures with chemical treatment. The input material consisted of untreated modified scales and of transparent glaze P017. Scales were in the first stage of preparation annealed at 700oC and 900 oC, and in the second stage they were chemically modified by H2SO4. Prepared mixtures of the series I were applied on the potsherds and subsequently fired at 1060oC. Only X ray analysis was made for the mixture of series II. From the resulting colour scheme of mixtures are decisive factors chemical and phase composition and methods of treatment for the scales specific applications.
