Behaviour of selected rare-earth metals at the crystallization of 42CrMo4 steel
Original language description
Rare-earth metals (REM) such as cerium and lanthanum are powerful deoxidising and desulphurising agents in steels. They are particularly attractive because they have boiling points that are high enough to allow their retention in solution in liquid steelto react with oxygen and sulphur according to thermodynamic and kinetic considerations. Oxygen content needs to be minimised, REM sulphide particles may be formed as opposed to cerium oxides. However, as much sulphur as possible requires to be retainedin the steel in order to achieve a high density of fine particles. The influence of cerium and praseodymium addition on solidification structure of the low-carbon 42CrMo4 steel was investigated. Alloys were prepared by means of a centrifugal casting. Theaddition of Ce or Pr in the steel (amount 0.1 wt.%) produced greatly improved solidification structure with a suppressed columnar grain zone, finer grain size in the equiaxed grain zone. The added REM occurred in the steel both in the fo
