Influence of intense ingot cooling on its macrostructural and chemical heterogeneity

  • Original language description

The technology of intensive cooling of steel cast into molds has been tested. The project solution was divided into two parts. Two ingots of the same type were cast. The cast steel had the same chemical composition, temperature and casting speed in both cases. For both ingots, the macrostructural and chemical heterogeneity of the cast steel was compared in four zones in a longitudinal axial section and three cross sections along the height of the ingot. The evaluated macrostructures show that the influence of the intense cooling has manifested itself greatly in the base of the ingot where the zone of coarse, differently oriented crystals has grown. An analysis of the macro-structure of the cooled and non-cooled ingot further shows that the lower part of the cooled ingot has increased the incidence of porosity and, on the contrary, it has significantly reduced in the upper part of the ingot. In addition, it has been found that intensive heat removal during ingot casting and solidification has a major effect on reducing the decomposition of the C, Cr and Mo elements. The calculation of the heat balance showed that approximately by 20% more heat was removed from the chilled ingot than that of the uncooled ingot. The highest increase in heat output was found at the bottom of the ingot.
