Characterization of slags from iron and steel production
Original language description
The metallurgical industry is from quantitative and qualitative aspects an important indicator of economic and technological advancement in the country. The produced steel and iron are among the primary construction materials. However, the production of iron and steel is always accompanied by the emergence of secondary products. In the aspect of the amount produce by-products, is slag production is the most significant, without which the production of iron and steel cannot be realized. At present, the importance of by-products of the industry as an alternative source of raw materials is growing. Slags are classified according to the type of metal produced, on the steel slags and blast furnace slags, that are produced from iron production. Due to physical and chemical properties slags represents a significant raw material for other industries. The extensive potential for the use of secondary raw materials from the metallurgical industry is offered by the construction industry, especially the transport structures, which using blast furnace slags and steel slags too. Slags represent as an alternative to natural raw materials. For these waste materials to be efficiently used, it is important to know their properties. The composition of the slag is very variable and therefore each slag must be considered as a subject study. This paper focuses on characterize selected metallurgical slags, in which the chemical composition and phase composition were determined before and after exposure of the samples to the hydration environment. The properties that were observed for these slag samples are given also. These properties are density and bulk stability at the hydration medium at elevated temperature.
