Methodology for determining surface properties of Fe-C-Cr alloys
Original language description
The paper focuses on experimental determination and subsequent evaluation of surface properties of selected Fe-alloys. The surface tension of the alloys and their wetting angles on alumina substrate were determined by sessile drop method in the temperature range from the melting point to the temperature of 1600 oC. Experimental study of the surface properties of liquid multicomponent alloys by one of the contacting methods is challenging. The cause is the high reactivity of metallic melts with the solid substrate at high temperatures, chemical heterogeneity, roughness, a porosity of substrate surface and, last but not least, a high sensitivity of the surface tension to any trace amount impurities. However, the characterization of the surface of the solid materials by determining the contact angle of a sessile drop on the solid substrate (high-temperature wettability) helps to understand physicochemical processes at the interfacial area. Three Fe-C-Cr model alloys with a carbon content 0.34 wt. %, chromium content 0.92-4.76 wt. %, and a trace amount of sulfur 0.0062-0.0675 wt. % was heated while in contact with highly pure Al2O3 at a rate of 5 oC.min-1 in resistance observation furnace Clasic filled with a protective atmosphere of argon (> 99.9999%). The temperature was measured by the thermocouple Pt - 13%Rh/Pt. The shape of the sessile drop was monitored by the camera CANON EOS 550D when the sample was melted. It was found that the surface tension of all analyzed systems increases with increasing temperature thus dσ/dT was positive. Furthermore, it was also shown that the surface tension depends positively on the chromium content. The wetting angles also increased with increasing chrome content and temperature.
