Impregnation of activated carbon with ionic liquids for the removal of micropollutants and antibiotic resistance genes from wastewater
Original language description
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), resulting from the misuse of antibiotics, have become a new type of pollutant with a high environmental threat. ARGs enter wastewater and sewage sludge from various sources of antibiotics. Conventional water treatment removes most of the bacteria, but the ARGs remain. Ionic liquids have antimicrobial effects and can eliminate ARG in water. The surface of granular activated carbon was impregnated with ionic liquids and tested for Bacillus subtilis and Aeromonas sp. growth inhibition in model and real water samples. The impregnated carbon showed a positive effect on the elimination of bacteria in the water.
