What Are the Costs of Disinflation?
Original language description
The paper is concerned with costs of disinflation, because the experience of many countries in the early 1980s shows that reductions in inflation are often bought out at considerable short-term cost in terms of lower output and higher unemployment. Thisarticle therefore deals with sacrifice ratio - the proportion of a year's output that must be foregone to reduce inflation permanently by one percent. The paper also briefly summarizes the results of some empirical studies on sacrifice ratio estimates and some of the empirical work on the benefits of lower inflation.
