The article deals with contemporary approaches towards regional development that are strongly influenced by institutional economics. Quality of both formal and informal institutions becomes increasingly important presumption of practical accomplishment of regional development. In transitional economies the application of institutional approaches towards regional development encounters with unsatisfactory state of institutions, which is the consequence of historical development in these countries.
