More emphasis has been put on the support of research and development not only within the Czech Republic. This contribution is dealing with the research and development in the Czech Republic as one of the factors in the economy competitiveness. It focuses on the position of research and development in the Czech Republic, the requirements of EU policy to create conditions for the European Research Area, and the financing possibilities from EU resources as part of the Operational Program Research and Development for Innovations 2007-2013 in the Czech Republic. The work also focuses on the evaluation of the financial support and expenditures in connection with research and development in the Czech Republic it also compares the intensity of research and development within the EU and worldwide.
