Original language description
Regions increasingly becoming driver forces, i.e. "locomotives" of economic development because of concentration and specialization of economic activities. Economic fundamentals of territories are at risk of relocating production activities to places with better conditions and by regionalization of public policies. Location can be a contributing factor to competitiveness of regions with respect to risk of relocating production activities. The main aim of the paper is to distinguish the factors of competitiveness of EU NUTS 2 regions in reference period 2004-2012 and by using of Malmquist Productivity Index to divide these regions to special zones of specific competitive endowment. Competitive zones are suggested as a strategy for recognizing strengthsand weaknesses of regions to streamline local activities towards effective and to increase their competitiveness.
