Processing of spatial data in public administration is increasingly performed by geographic information systems. The main advantage of GIS tools is the ability to show data over the map and to analyze their spatial relations. For this reason, GIS are inthe public sector wide expanded and become part of the decision-making process and a suitable tool for the organization and development of the managed area. They are one of the ways how to improve performance and efficiency in public administration and they help to manage the entrusted assets economically and effectively. The protection of cultural heritage against flood risk is described in this paper. The aim is to assess the risk of flooding of cultural heritage in Ostrava by usage of GIS tools. Theoutput of research is the identification of objects at risk and the proposal of solutions. There are suggested appropriate procedures and measures for state administration applicable to protection of cultural heritage against flood damage
