Europe's competitiveness depends on a multiplicity of actions that can optimise the potentials within its regions. Nowadays, regions are increasingly becoming the drivers of the economy. All regions possess development opportunities - however, use theseoptions enough and hence the competitiveness of European regions must be efficient enough. It is well-known that there are significant differences among the European Union regions which weaken its competitiveness. The paper is focused on using the Data Envelopment Analysis method for comparison the efficiency changes among selected EU NUTS 2 regions and find out the level of the EU main capital cities competitiveness and surrounding areas. The main aim of the paper is to search the efficient frontier and to find an optimal number of groups for analysis of differences in competitiveness which is linked with efficiency based on sources and results of competitive society - empirical analysis of the paper is thus solved via specified multic
