Original language description
In recent years, a public debt in the European Union due to the economic crisis has increased, while the rate of growth of real output was not very favourable. Existing empirical literature has found the negative correlation between debt and growth in advanced and emerging economies, especially at the rate of public debt higher than 90 % of GDP. In this study we focused on the relationship between public debt-to-GDP ratio and real GDP growth rate on the sample of European Union countries in the pre-crisis period. We used the graphical analysis and correlation. Our empirical evidence points to a relatively strong negative linear relationship between the public debt and economic growth in European Union countries.
