APPLICATION OF COMPOSITE WEIGHTED INDICES APPROACH IN REGIONAL DISPARITIES MEASUREMENT

  • Original language description

Regional disparities among countries and its measurement is an important topic in the frame of enlarged European Union. We can identify several approaches and methods of measurement and evaluation of disparities between states and regions at European level. The methods differ in structure of using indicators of disparities and ways of their processing. The aim of the paper is to apply specific model of composite weighted aggregate index of regional disparities to classify and evaluate the level of economic, social and territorial disparities in the case of selected EU regions. Model of regional disparities measurement based on selected multivariate mathematical and statistical methods lead to construction of three-layer model of weighted aggregate index of disparities. Theoretical part of the paper defines the concept of regional disparities in EU context and methodological background of convenient statistical approach for disparities evaluation. The empirical part of the paper deals with the measurement, evaluation and comparison of disparities in Visegrad Four ( V4) NUTS 2 regions during reference period 2000-2012 through computed values of synthetic sub-indices of economic, social and territorial disparities and weighted aggregate index of disparities. Synthetic indices showed positive economic, social and territorial development in V4 NUTS 2 regions and thus level of cohesion recorded increasing trend thanks to decreasing volume of regional disparities.
