The regional dimension of migration and labour markets in Central and Eastern Europe
Original language description
In this chapter, we focus on migration trends in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region after 1989. We analyse and discuss the evolution and characteristics of emigration waves following the collapse of communist regimes, and in connection with the EU enlargements towards the East. We review thoroughly the existing empirical evidence to highlight the major migration determinants, socioeconomic characteristics of CEE migrants and impacts of migration. Furthermore, we discuss the changing character of the region from the typically net emigration towards the net immigration region, and we give an overview of major immigration trends to the CEE countries. In the chapter, we also draw attention to the contemporary refugee crisis and the position of the macro-region within that crisis. Later on, we discuss some major developments and characteristics of the CEE labour markets. Spatial patterns of labour markets in individual countries will be depicted in a synthetic way.
