Resource-Workflow Petri Nets with Time Tokens and Their Using in Process Management

  • Original language description

Resource-workflow Petri nets with time tokens (RWPNTT) are the newly introduced class of low-level process Petri nets in this article. RWPNTT are specifically designed for their use in the process management area for modeling processes consisting of individual time-dependent activities that must be synchronized with a given external time source and for determining their time-optimal critical paths. The concept of global network time is not explicitly introduced in the definition of the class of RWPNTT and this fact simplifies its implementation and the proof of its properties. The concept of global network time is then worked only implicitly within the mechanism of transition firing. The new RWPNTT class also enables the analysis of other process properties by using of well-known methods of Petri nets theory and it also has the possibility to determine the time-optimal critical path of the given process whose activities share a finite set of different resources that are necessary to successfully complete any of them. These properties of RWPNTT class are demonstrated on the process examples in this article.
