Preparation of al-intercalated/pillared clay materials from Na-Form and acidified vermiculite and montmorillonite characterized by XRD and FTIR analysis

  • Original language description

In this work, vermiculite (VT) and montmorillonite (MT) were used for preparation of Al-pillared materials synthesized using AlCl3 .6H2O and NaOH as precursors by incorporation of Al cation into clay minerals layers and subsequent heating at 500 oC. The effect of Na and H-forms for preparation of pillared samples was investigated. The structural properties of Al-intercalated/pillared samples were studied using X-ray diffraction analysis and Infrared spectroscopy. The results from elemental analysis and XRD diffraction analysis confirmed the successful intercalation of Al cations into clay minerals structure. The XRD patterns of MT samples after Al-intercalation display the d-values 1.861 nm for Na-form and 1.740 nm for H-form. These d-values suggest that cation Al13 was intercalated into the MT structure. The XRD patterns of VT samples after Al-intercalation confirmed intercalation of Al13 (d = 1_880 nm) and Al3 + cations (d = 1_428 nm) in sample prepared from Na-form of VT and only Al3 + cations (d = 1_398 nm) in sample from acidified form of VT.
