Determination of zinc speciation in metallurgical wastes by various analytical methods

  • Original language description

Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) dust and blast furnace (BF) sludge are hazardous metallurgical wastes generated in the collection of particulate material during steel and iron making processes. The occurrence and recovery of metallurgical wastes from steelmaking and iron making processes are nowadays the great problem, mainly to their big amount and environmental pollution by heavy metals potential. To prevent improper handling of zinc-containing steelmaking wastes and find better solutions for recycling these materials, AAS, XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to determine the chemical form of zinc. Two types of zinc-containing steelmaking wastes generated in basic oxygen furnace and blast furnace were collected. In dust and sludge collected from the BOF and BF, zinc existed predominantly as franklinite phase (ZnFe2O4), in lower portion as zincite (ZnO). These findings deepened our understanding of zinc speciation contained in zinc-containing steelmaking wastes and provided the fundame
