Mn substitution of Co in mixed oxides: Effect on physical, chemical and catalytic properties in direct NO decomposition

  • Original language description

This results were presented at the conference Europacat2024 in Prague (27.8.-1.9.2023) as a poster presentation.NO together with NO2 are known as NOx, which are mainly produced by anthropogenic activities (combustion of fossil fuels, in cars and industry) and their emissions represent serious environmental problems causing formation of photochemical smog and acid rains. Commonly used methods (selective catalytic reduction and selective non-catalytic reduction) are effective, however, reducing agent (NH3, urea) is needed. Co-based mixed oxides catalysts modified by K were found to be active in direct NO decomposition producing N2 and O2 as the final products. It is known that addition of K to Co oxides ensures the required catalytic properties. Partial substitution of Co by Mg in K/Co4MnAlOx was performed and the catalytic activity did not change. It suggests that Co, which is corrosive, toxic and expensive, can be replaced by another metal without loss of activity. In this study, Mn was used for substitution for Co. The set of samples denoted as CozMn5-zAlOx was prepared by co-precipitation of corresponding nitrates and modified by2 wt.% of K. Using several characterization techniques (AAS, XPS, XRD, SBET TEM, TPR H2, TPD CO2, TPD NO, XAS), the physico-chemical properties of prepared catalysts were studied in relation to their catalytic performance.. From obtained results, it can be concluded that potassium and Co play the key role in NO decomposition reaction, since the K/Mn5AlOx is totally inactive. The increase of NO conversion can be observed up to molar ratio Co/Mn = 3/2, higher amounts of cobalt in the sample do not influence obtained conversion. Presence of manganese affects the catalyst long term stability. The most stable catalyst is K/Co4MnAlOx which also showed the largest SBET.
