Oxidation of dichloromethane and methanol on Pt/TiO2-CeO2@VUKOPOR(R)A ceramic foams
Original language description
Dichloromethane and methanol, solvents widely used in chemical industry and pharmaceuthics production, represent a large volume of produced harmful liquid waste which needs to be effectively disposed, since acccording to the International Agency for Research on Cancer dichloromethane belongs to the 2A group (probable carcinogens to humans) and toxic methanol to the 2B group (possible carcinogens to humans). Catalytic combustion/oxidation is economically acceptable and efficient technology for fullfilling the strict EU limits of VOCs gaseous emissions, but there is still a necessity of development of efficient, durable and industrially well-applicable catalysts. This work focuses on the development of the application-attractive Pt/TiO2-CeO2-based open-cell foam supported catalyst and investigates its catalytic performance (activity and selectivity) in oxidation of two model VOCs - dichloromethane (Cl-VOC) and methanol (oxygenated VOC). Layers of Pt/TiO2-CeO2 and TiO2-CeO2 catalysts of optimized chemical composition were deposited on commercial VUKOPOR(R)A ceramic foam (LANIK, s.r.o., Czech Republic) by using a reverse micelles-controlled sol-gel method combined with dip-coating and calcination. Catalytic experiments with TiO2-CeO2@VUKOPOR(R)A and Pt/TiO2-CeO2@VUKOPOR(R)A foams were carried out on a laboratory-made set-up composed of a flow-through tube reactor with a fixed catalyst bed located in the furnace, injection of dichloromethane (500 ppm) with water (1.5 vol.%) or methanol (500 ppm) and an on-line FTIR analyzer. The efficiency of catalytic foams in dichloromethane oxidation was studied in the temeparature range of 100MINUS SIGN 500oC, in methanol oxidation in the range of 45MINUS SIGN 500oC, at the space velocity (GHSV) of 11, 600 hMINUS SIGN 1 which is close to industrial scale conditions. The effect of dichloromethane concentration on the catalytic efficiency of foams was studied as well. The catalytic results reveal that Pt impregnation does not affect dichloromethane and methanol conversion, but significantly improve the yields of main rection products (CO2, HCl), yielding decreased concentrations of unwanted by-products (CH2O, CO). No chlorinated by-products were detected in dichloromethane oxidation. Increased dichloromethane concentration (50-500 ppm) negligibly decresed dichloromethane conversion.
