EFFECT OF TiO2 SYNTHESIS TECHNIQUE ON THE PHOTOCATALYTIC REDUCTION OF CO2

  • Original language description

This research was based on the evaluation and comparison of the photocatalytic activity for CO2 reductionover two types of differently synthesized TiO2 photocatalysts. Specifically, TiO2 photocatalyst samples wereprepared by sol-gel (TiSG) and hydrothermal methods (TiHT). The physical-chemical properties of thephotocatalytically TiO2-based nanomaterials obtained were comprehensively characterized by many analyticaltechniques (X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), N2 adsorption, UV-Visdiffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoelectrochemicalmeasurements (photocurrent)). Based on the results, it was proved that the synthesized TiO2-based photocatalystsshowed enhanced selectivity to CO and CH4 during the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 compared to the most widelyused photocatalyst in photocatalysis TiO2 Evonik P25. After further investigation, the significant influences of aportion of hydroxyl oxygen species and a portion of various surface oxygen species on photocatalytic activity andthus the efficiency of the photocatalytic CO2 reduction process were studied. This work also highlighted the relationbetween pH during the CO2 reduction process and photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction, which is reflected inthe yields of hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), and methane (CH4). The results obtained from the realizedCO2 photocatalytic reduction experiments clarified the higher formation of H2 and CO in the acidic environment. While CH4 is mainly formed in the basic environment.
