Synthesis and Characterization of Fly Ash/Gypsum Ceramic Composites
Original language description
The industrial waste like fly ash (FA) from the power station and the calcium anhydrite, gypsum (G) solid calcium-based reaction products from fluid gas desulfurization can be used for the cost-effective approach for synthesis of an environmentally friendly materials. One of the ways in using such wastes in large quantities is by utilizing them in brick manufacture. The work reports the results on the performance of Fly Ash/Gypsum (FA/G) ceramic composites which were made using FA from power plant and G waste incinerated in a "homogenized" mixture. An investigation was done on the two series of the FA and G mixtures containing G = 5 or 25 wt.%. The second series was pulverized by milling (m) for 20 min. The flowable mixtures were prepared with distilled water and then poured into the molds (20 x 20 x 20 mm). Specimens were kept for 24 h in the laboratory condition, and then dried at 110 oC for 5 h and finally, dry cubes were sintered to the desired temperature of 1100oC. Fly ash-gypsum ceramic composites were tested for compressive strength and durability in acidic environments resulting from acidic rain. Compressive strength of the FA/G ceramic composites ranged between 7.35 to 9.53 MPa. The compressive strength for conventional clay bricks and cement bricks are 15 MPa and 12 MPa, respectively and the minimum compressive strength of clay bricks is 6.8 MPa. This indicates that the ceramic bricks produced in the investigation have satisfactory compressive strength. The results of mechanical properties and durability in acidic waters are promising. The FA/G ceramic composites developed in this study can be used as an alternative to the conventional bricks.
