Microwave-initiated catalytic decomposition of Polyetherimide (PEI) with a focus on hydrogen and high-value hydrocarbons production
Original language description
In this study, waste polymer polyetherimide (PEI), which is used in numerous industries and in people's daily lives, was selected as the material for treatment. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of microwave treatment and degradation of PEI at elevated temperatures and under microwave radiation, with the aim of producing clean secondary raw materials in the form of gas, wax and condensate. These materials could then be utilised further in industrial applications. Polyetherimide (PEI) is an illustrative example of a material that exhibits resilience to microwave radiation and holds considerable promise for processing. The objective is to facilitate the decomposition of PEI through the utilisation of activated carbon (AC) catalysts that have been impregnated with metal oxides. This is followed by the direct microwave heating of the material and the catalytic decomposition of PEI into high-value products.
