Contribution (POSTER) on 50th International Conference of Slovak Society of Chemical Engineering – SSCHE 2024, 20.5.-24.5.2024, Tatranske Matliare, Slovakia.Caprolactam (CPL) is the precursor of Nylon 6, a widely used synthetic polymer. Most of the worldwide production of caprolactam is synthetized from cyclohexanone by the Beckmann rearrangement. The purity requirements of caprolactam are extremely stringent because even a small amount of impurities greatly affect the physical-mechanical properties of Nylon 6. Since both polar and nonpolar impurities are present in the crude caprolactam, pure caprolactam is obtained in the forward-extraction using a nonpolar organic solvent, such as trichlorethylene, benzene or toluene followed by back-extraction with water and multistage distillation. Although carcinogenic trichlorethylene (TCE) is often used in caprolactam forward-extraction, its replacement with an alternative solvent has not been published yet. Promising alternative to TCE are mixed solvents of alcohol and alkane/cycloalkane, where alcohol ensures high solubility of CPLand the presence of alkanes decreases the mutual solubility with water [1, 2].
