Adsorbents of VOCs and emerging pollutants prepared by microwave pyrolysis of waste
Original language description
Disposal of waste especially polymers, biomass and animal by-products is nowadays an urgent issue. A promising technique for converting these wastes into a valuable carbonaceous adsorbent is microwave pyrolysis. Microwave pyrolysis is a unique technique and offers several advantages over conventional pyrolysis, such as better controllability and higher efficiency leading to cost-effectiveness. Carbon prepared by microwave pyrolysis such as pyrolytic carbon black and activated pyrolytic carbon black (prepared by chemical activation) can be used as a cheap adsorbent, highly effective for adsorption of non-polar and polar VOC from waste air or heavy metals from waste liquid phase. The unique properties of adsorbents are mainly connected with feedstocks type and preparation method (microwave power, retention time, type of feedstock, presence of activator). For mentioned above, this study is interesting in adsorption behaviour of carbons prepared from different waste (scrap tyres, corn cobs, waste animal bones, etc. without/with activator). Textural, chemical and surface properties are studied, and xylene adsorption from air and heavy metal from liquid phase is investigated in order to describe the adsorption capacity-determining factors.Presented as a oral prezentation.
