Pre-treatment of lignocellulosic waste to enhance methane yield in anaerobic digestion
Original language description
The increasing global energy demand, driven by population growth and rising living standards, underscores the need for sustainable energy solutions. With global energy consumption projected to grow by 1.5% annually, the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels - currently satisfying over 84% of demand-poses significant environmental challenges [1]. Biomass energy production, particularly through anaerobic digestion (AD), represents a promising avenue for renewable energy generation. However, the efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biogas is hampered by the slow degradation of solid materials, specifically cellulose. Lignocellulosic biomass, composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, presents a structural challenge due to strong molecular bonds that hinder the adsorption of hydrolytic enzymes. This study seeks to optimize the pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials, focusing on wastepaper from the paper industry, to enhance methane yields through anaerobic digestion [2]. Various pretreatment methods, including mechanical, chemical, and thermal processes, have been employed to break down the physical barriers in cellulose-rich waste. Building on prior research, this study investigates the most effective conditions for maximizing biogas production, particularly methane yields, from paper industry waste. The findings aim to contribute to the development of efficient and sustainable methods for biogas production, aligning with global efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental impacts. By optimizing pretreatment techniques, this research advances the potential of AD as a key technology for renewable energy production.
