Infrared monitoring of industrial uniterruptible power supply batteries

  • Original language description

Various kinds of industries depend on uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) in a linear way, at least. With an increase in their complexity, the requirements for UPS gain on significance. UPS protect industrial technologies from being damaged by dangerous interruptions of an electric power supply. Advanced UPS monitoring performed by a battery management system (BMS) prevents the UPS from more serious damage due to its timely and accurate battery-fault detection mechanism based on voltage metering. While this advanced technique is widely used due to its high precision, it is also very expensive in the long-term, which often serves as a disadvantage for further applications of battery systems. Our research aims to develop low-cost UPS monitoring making use of infrared thermographic measurements. We assume that overheating of a battery implies its damaged state, which represents the leading factor behind our experiments. The paper brings a review of our current results, as well as shortly describes an extended automatized metering platform. We also review the options in design and development of a deep learning platform making use of the current software technologies and frameworks.
