Satellite InSAR applicability for monitoring bridge deformations
Original language description
This paper presents the major specifics of space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) techniques to be addressed for monitoring deformations of typical concrete or metallic bridge structures. Three case studies demonstrate the applicability of very high resolution satellite SAR data for continuous monitoring and the potential for an early detection of dangerous deformations from the time series of SAR measurements. Though there are some works related to bridge monitoring using InSAR existing already, in this work we put an additional value in analysing the accuracy of the radar phase evaluation and give simple but useful equations to show sensitivity of InSAR for bridge displacements in assumed orientation. Theoretical and technical aspects of these methodologies are presented and discussed focusing on innovative monitoring methods and the opportunities that could potentially improve the monitoring processes are identified.
