Original language description

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as one of the most common liver disorders claiming the urgent attention of both medical professionals and the public sphere because of the imminent epidemic of advanced liver injury that appendages epidemic of obesity. Recent research reveals simple triglyceride accumulation in hepatocytes (i.e., liver steatosis) frequently becoming complicated by inflammation (i.e., non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH) that may progress into more advanced stagesof the disease including cirrhosis or, eventually, hepatocellular carcinoma. The exact mechanisms of the progression of NAFLD into overt NASH and advanced disease stages are largely unknown. There is urgent meed in terms of both intensive research pursuits and effective practical measures to deal with this common threat.

Nealkoholická steatóza až steatocirhóza jater (NAFLD) se v současné době jeví jako nejběžnější onemocnění jater. Epidemický charakter bezprostředně hrozícího poškození jater doprovázejícího obezitu si žádá urgentní pozornosti jak profesionální tak veřejné sféry. Současný výzkum odkrývá, že akumulace jednoduchých triglyceridů v játrech (tj. jaterní steatóza) je často komplikovaná zánětem (tj. nealkoholická steatohepatitida, nebo NASH), a může přejít do více komplikovaných stavů nemoci, včetně cirhózy, eventuelně hepatocelulárního karcinomu. Přesné mechanismy postupu NAFLD do zjevné NASH jsou z velké části neznámé. Je zde naléhavá potřeba věnovat se jak intenzivnímu výzkumu tak současně praktickému monitorování tohoto všeobecného problému.
