Multiple myeloma: scintigraphy using technetium-99m-2-methoxyisobutylisonitrile
Original language description
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a clonal B-lymphocyte neoplasm of plasma cells. It accounts for 1% of all malignant diseases and represents 10% of hematologic malignancies. The hallmark of MM is the presence of a monoclonal protein (MIG), produced by the abnormal plasma cells in the blood or urine. The whole body scintigraphy using Tc-99m-MIBI seems to be an easy, sensitive, and available parameter of biological activity of multiple myeloma (MM). Individual patterns of Tc-99m-MIBI uptake in MM patients showeda close association with the grade of disease activity, correlation with clinical stage of the disease and allowed with high sensitivity the discrimination of the patients in remission from those with recurrent disease. Patients with MGUS had mostly physiological pattern of Tc-99m-MIBI uptake, or only a very low activity of diffuse pattern.
