Granular cell basal cell carcinoma: A rare variant

  • Original language description

Importance: Granular cell basal cell carcinoma is an extremely rare microscopic variation of basal cell carcinoma. So far, only 12 cases in humans have been described in the literature. We present the 13th case of GBCC, which, according to available resources, is the second case observed in the Czech Republic out of the total number. Observations: A 5mm tumour on the auricle of a 50-year-old woman, with the clinical appearance of nodular basal cell carcinoma, was excised and subjected to histopathological analysis. An extremely rare subtype of basal cell carcinoma was confirmed. Conclusions and relevance: Due to the small number of observed cases, evaluation of the epidemiologic and prognostic data is difficult. However, in all the cases (including ourcase) the clinical picture and course did not differ from normal variants of basal cell carcinoma. In order to provide the correct therapy, precise diagnosis and differentiation from other granular cell tumours are crucial.
