Introduction: To evaluate the significance of PET/CT for the initial staging of esophageal cancer with emphasis on metastatic lymph node affection and detection of distant metastases. Furthermore, the aim of the work was to analyze the significance of PET/CT examination when evaluating the effect of neoadjuvant therapy. Conclusion: The work documents the significance and benefit of PET/CT in the initial staging of esophageal cancer, especially in detecting metastatic disease-positive lymph nodes as wellas distant metastases. PET/CT has great importance in determining therapeutic strategy. Furthermore, the significance of PET/CT in evaluating the effect of neoadjuvant therapy was also studied.
