Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpom Aiton.) in prophylaxis and treatment of urological conditions.
Original language description
Cranberry is a rich source of micronutrients which have been shown to ameliorate urological conditions such as urinary tract infection, lower urinary tract symptoms, prostate cancer and its biochemical sequelae. Various studies have confirmed beneficial effect of cranberry products in the prevention or reduction in these diseases. Review of literature summarises the in vivo anti-adhesive, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects of cranberry products (whole cranberry, the juice, dried extracts) studied by different researchers. The objective of this chapter is to review current knowledge about the role of cranberry secondary metabolites against urinary diseases. Nevertheless, while, most clinical studies with cranberry products have resulted in positive outcomes supporting the role of cranberry micronutrients as preventive agents in urological diseases, questions remain. It is necessary to focus on target populations, time of intervention, appropriate dosage and provide responses as to which classes of secondary metabolites act as preventive agents.
