  • Original language description

In absolute terms, atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of arrhythmia; there is no doubt it is the cause of significant morbidity and mortality. The Framingham study reported a 50–90% increase in all-cause mortality in patients with this type of arrhythmia compared with the population in sinus rhythm. The increase in morbidity in AF is associated, in particular, with increased risk of stroke, peripheral embolism, heart failure, and vascular dementia. Needless to say, AF is also a major socioeconomic problem as, particularly, the costs of long-term treatment of the sequels of this arrhythmia account for an appreciable proportion of the healthcare budget; hence the current emphasis on thorough primary and secondary AF prevention. At present, there is a lack of truly latest epidemiological data on the incidence of AF. The 2% prevalence in the adult population with a markedly increasing incidence in persons above 65 years of age will in fact be, if including asymptomatic episodes, appreciably higher. A number of sources suggest an up to 5% incidence of this arrhythmia in adult individuals.
