Developmental changes in iron metabolism and erythropoiesis in mice with human erythropoietin receptor

  • Original language description

We previously created a mouse model of PFCP bearing the gain-of-function erythrocytosis-causing human EPOR gene mutation (mtHEPOR) and shown that mtHEPOR embryos develop erythrocytosis around embryonic day (ED)17.5, followed by transient amelioration of erythrocytosis in perinatal life and its reappearance at 3–6 weeks of age. Similarly, erythrocytosis is absent in patients with PFCP in the perinatal period and develops within a few weeks of neonatal life. The mtHEPOR homozygous mice have even greater erythrocytosis than their heterozygous counterparts. Now we investigated how the developmental and age-related changes of erythron in mtHEPOR heterozygotes and homozygotes are interconnected with changes in iron homeostasis.
