Gender Differences in Subjective Perception and Evaluation of Own Body
Original language description
Human self-conception develops from an early age on the basis of interactions with other people. Dissatisfaction with one's own person is perceived according to a subjective and socially conditioned way of perception. The way of perceiving one's own body is not determined the real shape and size of the body, but rather by subjective assessment. On the other hand, evaluation by other people is also important. Methods: The main objective of the research was to identify gender differences in the perception and evaluation of the own body. Specifically, we focused on the facial part of the body. The data were collected using an anonymous questionnaire, which was completed by the respondents. The data were analysed by the Statistica 10.0 programme. The chi-squared test, Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcoxon test were applied. For all statistical methods used in the study the threshold level of significance was 5 %. Results: The research sample included 588 girls with an average age of 15.2 years and 596 boys with an average age of 14.89 years. The results of the research suggest that boys (86.3 %) are dissatisfied with their body significantly more than girls (74.3 %). However, those girls who are dissatisfied with their body do not have a tendency to change it. A lower proportion of boys who are dissatisfied with their body do not want to change it, there is another group of boys who neither approve nor exclude such change. In the perception of the own face, no significant gender differences were identified; two thirds of girls and boys are satisfied with their face. In terms of individual facial parts, the respondents have most positive attitudes to their eyes and hair, with no gender differences.
