    The importance of robotic hand rehabilitation in older adults

    The ageing of the population is a global trend that has serious implications for individuals and the functioning of society as a whole. Areas that are significantly affected by ageing include fine motor skills, which are essential for carrying out everyday activities. The aim of this pilot research was to evaluate the effect of robotic hand therapy on grip strength of selected grip types and manipulative functions in the older adults. Group: The sample consisted of 16 participants (5 males and 11 females, mean age 76.56 ± 6.97 years) briefly hospitalized at the Department of Geriatrics, University Hospital Olomouc. Three participants preferred the left hand and 13 the right hand. Methods: The participants underwent a 14-day treatment using the Pablo® X2 robotic device. Manipulation function was evaluated at entry and exit using the standardized Czech Manipulation Function Test and grip strength using the Pablo® Handsensor. Results: The results showed statistically significant improvement for the cylindrical, pincer, and all but one of the tweezer grips. Scores on several subtests of the Manipulative Function Test also improved. Conclusions: The results suggest that robotic rehabilitation can be used as an effective adjunct to traditional therapeutic approaches aimed at improving grip strength and fine motor skills in older adults.
