The paper was inspired by the Salzburg Seminar No. 352 "Music for the New Millenium: Classical Genre in Contemporary Society" which took place in Salzburg, Austria in December 1997. It describes the situation of the phenomenon of the European classical music since the W. A. Mozart's times until its today's position worldwide (Western and Central Europe, Russia, USA, Japan, Israel, India etc.). From the point view of music aesthetics, music theory, music sociology etc., it characterizes the position of acontemporary composer and the role of the performing artist.
