Media Construction of Reality: Structural Analysis of Roma Representation in Newspapers (a case study)
Original language description
This paper introduces an example of structural (semiotic) analysis of newspaper message made on the basis of semiotic paradigm of media. For the analysis the image of Roma was chosen. The author demonstrates which signs the photograph works with, what their denotative and connotative meanings are and which myths (in Barthes' sense) it accentuates. The gypsy myth and the myth of police are analysed as an example of the story about Us and Them. The Roma are depicted as the threat for the majority societyand the photograph is seen as a metonymy for conflicts between Roma and majority in the Czech society. In this way it contributes to forms of new racism. This paper is not a representative study but an attempt to refer to multiaccentual character of thesigns which is necessary to keep in mind in the process of construction of news.
