Factors relating to EU accession referendum in the Czech Republic

Original language description

The study briefly analyses a number of factors relating to the referendum on the Czech Republic's EU accession. In particular it deals with the influence of political orientation, basic social and demographic aspects and historical experience and stereotypes on voters' decisions. As for the historical experience and stereotypes in modern Czech history, the author deals with attitudes towards Germans and Austrians or towards the expulsion of millions of Germans from Czechoslovak territory. Apprehension about the possible return of land and property claims of those forcibly displaced is currently felt, especially in the border regions neighboring Germany and Austria.
