The narrative identity of politicized characters in four Afrikaans novels
Original language description
Paul Ricoeur showed how narrative identity gives unity to the self while explaining change. I postulate that personal identity is a constructed identity which exists in a life narrative of an individual because of identifications within the discourse. Are-definition of Afrikaner-identity (in Die kreef raak gewoond daaraan); engagement with the improvement of the lives of others (in Boendoe); the refusal of being the ?nobody? of racist discourse (Die storie van Monica Peters) and the complications of being an individualist who refuses to identify with any race group (Klapperhaar slaap nie stil nie) are identity narratives given by Afrikaans literature that can be integrated into the life stories of its readers.
