Language Rerflected Properties of Space: the Case of Wide and Broad

The topic of the monograph is conceptualization of extra-linguistic space. After a short account of theories dealing with linguistically relevant properties of space, results of a detailed, corpus-based analysis of two, arguably synonymous adjectives that English speakers use to talk about one spatial dimension - wide and broad ? are presented. Both words were retrieved from four corpora (LOB, FLOB, Brown, Frown), and their abstract and concrete meanings analyzed with respect to the notion of ?boundary?as used in cognitive frameworks. The study is a contribution to the field of lexical semantics.
