The paper argues that Cooper's first and most important Indian protagonist, Chingachgook, could be regarded as a Moravian Indian because he received Christianity from the Moravian Brethren, who, as the name suggests, had originally come from Moravia, theWestern part of the Czech Republic. The main focus is on another Moravian influence, J.G. Heckewelder, whose books provided Cooper not only with detailed information about the woodland Indian culture but also stirred his imagination and contributed thusto the success of his Leatherstocking Tales. For Cooper the Indian culture an important referent of American cultural identity conceived in terms of democratic plurality

Hned první a nejdůležitější indiánskou postavu, Chingachgooka, lze považovat za "moravského Indiána", protože přijal křesťanství od Moravských bratří. Článek se proto zabývá pravděpodobně nejdůležitějším zdrojem Cooperových znalostí lesní indiánské kultury severovýchodní části USA, J.G. Heckewelderem, misionářem Moravských bratří. Heckewelderovy spisy nejenom poskytly Cooperovi cenné informace, ale přímo inspirovaly Coopera a pomohly mu vytvořit klíčové obrazy a situace. Pro Coopera představovala indiánská kultura jeden z důležitých prvků v procesu konstituování americké národní identity jako kultury demokraticky pluralitní.
