Original language description
This study scrutinizes the social aspects of smoking tobacco in Qing China, and tries to point out the dominant attitudes toward it. The historic issues concerning the arrival and accommodation of tobacco in China, its agricultural development and economic expansion, and the perceptions of tobacco by traditional medicine, are surveyed as to provide a comprehensive background. Written and pictorial sources were used, as well as the few hitherto existing studies in Chinese.
