A Patristic Figure in Early Romanian Literature: Neagoe Basarab and His Teachings to His Son Theodosie

  • Original language description

Învăţăturile lui Neagoe Basarab către fiul său Teodosie, a paraenetic text originally written in Old Slavonic in the early sixteenth century, is attributed to Neagoe Basarab, ruler of Ţara Românească (Wallachia) between 1512-1521. He was patron and protector of the Eastern Church in the southern part of the Romanian lands and in other regions of south-eastern Europe, and spiritual child of saint Niphon, Patriarch of Constantinople (1486-1489) and later Metropolitan of Ţara Românească. The present paperseeks to highlight the cultural situation in this part of the Romanian lands at the time of Neagoe Basarab's rule, and also aspects of his personal and spiritual life, which, as reflected in Învăţături, account for his patristic approach to politics andto the world in general.
