Film Music in Czech Music Periodicals in the 1960s
Original language description
The loosening of socio-political constraints in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s caused a blossoming of creative development in the areas of film and film music. Thanks to the restoration of contacts with Western European music, Czech composers began to use new composition techniques; they also began to use 'real' sounds and silence more functionally, while also incorporating elements of jazz and popular music into their film scores. As a consequence, film music started to change in scope and interest. This paper observes how Czech music periodicals, Hudební rozhledy ['Music Review'] in particular, reflected these developmental changes. The author divides texts on film music into three groups according to their length, content and structure. Further aspects of the texts are explored including the development of their content. In the final part of this paper, the job of Czech film music critic in the 1960s is compared with the same position in the years preceding and following that decad
