A typical motif in gay fiction is that of a young man leaving his family, never to return. The gay subculture even has its own mechanism of replacing traditional biological families with "families of friends," which replace biological families in providing emotional support. However, there are also novels featuring a subplot in which a gay character travels back to his family, often with his partner. Only when the place of the protagonist's childhood is revisited and the family background revealed can the character be fully understood and it demands a complete reevaluation of the character by the readers. The article analyzes two novels, James Barr's Quatrefoil: A Modern Novel (1950) and Jim Grimsley's Comfort & Joy (1999). Even though they are sethalf a century apart, both use the same narrative technique for characterizing the protagonist. On another level, they testify to the fact that leaving one's family behind is impossible.
