Tokieda is considered to be both one of the most significant and also most controversial figures in the field of Japanese linguistics and kokugogaku. He has received widespread recognition but also strong criticism. This paper explains how his dissatisfaction with inadequacies in the then generally accepted application of mainstream European structuralist linguistics to Japanese, combined with his respect for traditional Japanese scholarship, culture and language, inspired him to develop his own uniqueapproach to Japanese linguistics and language theories. Attention is also paid to his ideas in the field of the national language policy and education.
